Beating GOLIATH

The incidence of obesity and metabolic disorders such as diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease has reached ‘Goliathan’ proportions. There is strong evidence that exposures to chemicals present in our environment contribute to these diseases. This project aims to ‘beat Goliath’ by better understanding how these chemicals work and developing new methods to test chemicals for metabolism disrupting effects.

What are metabolism disrupting chemicals?

MDCs are natural or anthropogenic chemicals that that have the ability to promote metabolic changes that can ultimately result in obesity, diabetes and/or fatty liver in humans. Four main targets tissues of MDCs will be studied in GOLIATH, namely adipose tissue, liver, pancreas and muscle.

Towards an integrated approach to testing and assessment of MDCs

Currently there are no regulatory tests to assess how and to what extent chemicals disrupt metabolism, leading to metabolic disorders. By developing and combining data from in silico and in vitro assays, animal and human studies, the aim of GOLIATH is to develop an integrated, internationally harmonised approach for testing and assessment.

Partners in GOLIATH

GOLIATH is an international consortium consisting of 15 partners from 8 European countries and the United States.

Final stakeholder seminar GOLIATH and ATHENA

Our final seminar ‘International initiatives to develop methods for the identification of metabolism and thyroid hormone system disruption chemicals’ will be held online and on-site on Tuesday 10 December 2024 from 14-17 CET. The seminar will include highlights and key messages from both the GOLIATH and ATHENA projects and will feature insights from different stakeholders […]
